Love, Charlie – an inclusive musical

Love Charlie!

Close your eyes for a moment and ask yourself: what do we truly need most in life? The answer is simple—to love and be loved deeply, unapologetically, and unconditionally. At the end of the day, all you really need is love.

This was the core theme of SESTAA’s latest offering—an inclusive musical drama titled Love, Charlie! performed on the 30th of August at the Doncaster Playhouse, with generous support from the Manningham Council. The production was a collaborative joint venture between author and documentary filmmaker Nandita Chakraborty, who also directed the play, and SESTAA.

At the center of the story is Charlie, a young man with Down syndrome who sets out on a quest to find love. Like so many of us, Charlie believes that finding a romantic partner will complete his life. However, while looking for love, he stumbles upon heartbreak—which ultimately transforms into deep, meaningful friendship.

The play tugged on everyone’s heartstrings thanks to the amazing performances by the cast: Charlie, the endearing protagonist; his mother, Mythili, Priti, the lady Charlie admires, and Bharat, her love interest and Charlie’s love rival.

The musical featured evocative songs like “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles and “Talking to the moon” by Bruno Mars, adding rich emotion and depth to the narrative that kept the audience completely mesmerized. The solo performances by young middle-school singers Hiya, Krish, and Neel were nothing short of phenomenal.

Opening the evening, a high-energy Bollywood dance number by the talented Ambika Choudhury set a joyful mood for the rest of the show.

This musical drama marks SESTAA’s very first home production and serves as a fitting follow-up to last year’s inclusive multi-organization dance show, which was also a major success.

Beyond the stage, the event helped raise awareness for our international charity activities, while further establishing SESTAA’s presence within Melbourne’s inclusive community.

The one-day event attracted a house-full crowd. We are thrilled with how the production turned out, and its success gives us tremendous motivation to organize more events like this in the future.

Love, Charlie – The Heart of the Story (by Nandita Chakraborty)

Love, Charlie is a musical about Charlie, a young man with Down syndrome who sets out on a quest to find love. Like so many of us, Charlie believes that finding a romantic partner will complete his life. But along the way, he discovers something far more profound: friendship.

Charlie teaches us that not every meaningful relationship has to become romantic to be love. Sometimes, friendship is its own extraordinary kind of love – a space where we are seen, accepted and valued simply for who we are.

Through Charlie’s journey, the musical asks us to look beyond the conventional idea of love. In a world that often measures relationships through romance, Charlie reminds us of the quiet power of human connection: a hand held, a friend who stays, a moment of kindness, a person who chooses to see you.

His journey becomes a parallel to our own. We may begin by searching for someone to love, only to discover that what we were really searching for was connection, belonging and the feeling of not being alone.

And perhaps that is what the world needs more of today -not simply more romantic love, but more friendship, more kindness, more acceptance and more willingness to open our hearts to one another.
Charlie doesn’t set out to teach anyone a lesson. He simply lives his truth. And in doing so, he shows us that friendship can be a beginning- a bridge to kindness, compassion and, ultimately, love.

Charlie comes looking for love.

What he finds is friendship.

And what he teaches us is that friendship, in its deepest form, is love.
